The School of HVAC/R at MTI
HVAC/R techs work on complex equipment, so the training for HVAC technicians requires a combination of theoretical knowledge and technical skills. MTI’s HVAC/R Technician Program in Missouri & Illinois provides hands-on HVAC technical training, helping you develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of an entry-level position in the field, including:
- Testing & installing various types of controls, motors, and fans
- Identifying & diagnosing the sequence of operation of heat pump applications
- Identifying & diagnosing the components of a refrigeration system
- Installing & troubleshooting electric heating furnaces
- Preparing for employment & certification exam review

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, HVAC/R technicians are skilled workers who install, inspect, maintain, and repair systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning & refrigeration and provide services such as air quality assessment, temperature control, and more.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT WITH AN HVAC TECHNICIAN SALARY?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in May 2023 the median annual wage for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers was $57,300. According to BLS, the highest 10 percent earned more than $84,250.
WHERE CAN I WORK AS AN HVAC/R TECHNICIAN?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, common work environments for HVAC/R technicians include homes, schools, stores, hospitals, office buildings or factories. Depending on the employer, HVAC techs could be assigned to a specific job site, or travel to several different locations making service calls.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the job outlook for HVAC/R technicians will increase by 9% from 2023 to 2033. BLS projects about 42,500 openings for HVAC/R techs every year (on average) over the decade.
