Welding Program at MTI
MTI’s welding school offers two programs: Welding and Welding & Pipefitting. Each welding program features hands-on training and prepares you to work in the welding industry using arc welding (SMAW, TIG, MIG, and FCAW) techniques. The Welding Program can be completed in less than a year and is ideal if you’re looking to learn the welding skills you need to start your career as an entry-level welder. If you’re interested in receiving additional pipefitting training, check out the Welding & Pipefitting Program. The School of Welding at MTI is an alternative to traditional college that allows you to pursue an exciting career path, such as traveling welder or shipbuilder, and spend less time and money compared to earning a 4-year college degree.
HANDS-ON WELDING TRAINING CLASSES
MTI’s Welding Program trains students in the following welding processes:
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
- Gas Tungsten Arc Gas Welding (GTAW/TIG)
- Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG)
- Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW)
The welding instructors at MTI bring real-world experience to the weld shop, using hands-on instruction and one-on-one interaction to provide students skills in:
Pipe Welding | Manufacturing | Cranes/Rigging | Pipefitting
Welding classes at MTI also include:

- Welding Metallurgy / Vocabulary
- Basic Blueprint Readings

If you’re interested in additional hands-on pipefitting training, check out the Welding & Pipefitting Program. This program teaches the same curriculum as the Welding Program, but also includes an additional 10 weeks of pipefitting classes.

The Welding Program prepares you for a variety of entry-level welding careers. MTI graduates have worked across several industries, including but not limited to, manufacturing, construction, and maintenance. The welding industry offers many different career paths, such as structural steel welder, sheet metal worker, boilermaker, industrial maintenance welder, industrial shutdown welder, rig welders, pipefitters, motorsports welders, shipyard welders, military welders, and even underwater welders.

Welding school is your first step toward pursuing a career in the welding industry. Here’s what you can expect when you attend MTI for your welding training:
Quick Facts: Welding Training Program
Welders are skilled tradespeople who play an important role in the construction and manufacture of infrastructure and products. Welders use over 100 different techniques to fuse metals and other types of materials together. They work in a diverse range of fields, constructing everything from ships and spacecraft to computers and commercial goods. In fact, welding is essential to the manufacturing of many U.S. products.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2023, the median annual wage for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers was $48,940. According to BLS data, the highest 10 percent earned more than $72,970. Wages may vary by work experience and skill level.
MTI’s welding graduates work across the country in manufacturing, construction, and maintenance fields. They are employed as boilermakers, pipefitters, structural welders, and many other welding-related jobs. Welding job opportunities vary, depending on skill level and experience, so earning a welding education and/or certifications can help increase your employability.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 45,800 job openings for welders each year, on average, over the decade (2023-2033).
