The professional massage therapist will be trained in performing therapeutic massage utilizing a
variety of techniques. Upon completion of the program, the graduate will receive a diploma
and is prepared to sit for the National Certification Examination to become a licensed massage
therapist.
The program provides the student with an entry-level theory and “hands-on” clinical training in
massage techniques and alternative therapies that will assist in the maintenance and promotion
of physical health and well-being. Students will learn how to provide hands-on care of clients
for the purpose of relieving soft tissue pain and connective tissue trauma. Students will learn to
provide massage techniques to assist in relaxation. The professional massage therapist will be
well-versed in wellness, nutrition, medical ethics, trigger points of the body, and business management
for the massage therapist.
Course subject descriptions are as follows:
FIRST TERM
PMT 100 Introduction to Massage Therapy 45 clock hours/lecture/3 credits
This is an introductory course that will focus on essential information needed to start a career as
a massage professional. It will include current information and standards for safe work
practices, an understanding of the body and its functions, general massage techniques, and
therapeutic skills such as assessment, application, and evaluation of those skills. This course
will emphasize the importance of skills in client/therapist relations, communications and
promotions. Students will also work from a workbook to assist in application of knowledge and
comprehension.
MED 121 Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Terminology for Massage Therapy 60 clock hours/lecture/4 credits
This course familiarizes the student with human anatomy and medical terminology. The course
covers the structure of a cell and progresses through the tissues and organs that make up the
body systems. Several body systems, functions, and diseases, including symptoms, diagnostic
tests, treatments, and medications are discussed. Medical terminology is included. Materials
may be tailored for the professional massage therapist.
MED123 Anatomy of Movement 60 clock hours/45 lecture/30 lab/4 credits
Anatomy of Movement is designed to teach the action of movements and joints. It includes the
insertions and origins, planes of movement, anatomical positioning and landmarks. This course
goes into detail about the muscles of the body and how they work.
PMT 110 Basic Pathology for Massage Therapy 75 clock hours/45 lecture/30 lab/4 credits
Students will learn about consequence of diseases and disorders that interrupt normal processes.
It will give the massage therapy student the tools to make informed decisions about modifying a
massage.
SECOND TERM
PMT 210 Massage fundamentals 75 clock hours/45 lecture/30 lab/4 credits
This course will continue in specific areas of massage therapy. Students will learn about sanitation,
application of massage, correct procedures, indications and contraindications. The course
will touch on specialized massage such as reflexology, lymphatic drainage, myofascial, acupressure,
hydrotherapy, and prenatal are topics of discussion. A workbook will be provided to
assist the student in application of knowledge and comprehension.
MED 122 Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Termonology II for Massage Therapy 45 clock hours/lecture/3 credits
The more complicated systems of the body and terminology are covered. Functions of the
systems, as well as diseases, diagnostic tests, treatments and medications are included. Medical
terminology continues. Materials will be tailored to the needs of a professional massage therapist.
MED 133 Anatomy of Movement II 45 clock hours/lecture//3credits

CLI 220 Clinical/Swedish Massage 75 clock hours/15 lecture/60 lab/3 credits
This course introduces students to the basic techniques of massage therapy. Lecture, demonstration
and practical application are extensive. Topics included in this course are draping, hygiene,
self-care, and basic body techniques.
THIRD TERM
PMT 230 Specialized Modalities 120 clock hours/30 lecture/90 lab/5 credits
This course will offer students the opportunity to expand their knowledge of different therapeutic
modalities. Hands on experience will include chair massage, pre-natal massage, deep tissue
massage, trigger point therapy, lymphatic drainage, muscle energy techniques, and eastern philosophies.
PMT 250 Massage Therapy Practicum 75 clock hours/15 lecture/60 lab/3 credits
Students will perform massage therapy in the school’s teaching clinic. Clients from the community
will receive services provided by the clinic. The student will be well prepared for reallife
experience of running a massage business. The student will be interacting with individual
clinic participants through the entire massage process, including the initial interview, discussing
massage needs, and performing therapeutic techniques. This course will offer the professional
massage therapist a review of materials that will enable them to be successful taking the National
Certification Exam, which is required to become a licensed massage therapist. Students
will not receive a fee or other consideration for their work while they are completing clinical
requirements for graduation.
MED 220 Ethics and Business Management for the Massage Therapist 30 clock hours/lecture/2 credits
It is imperative that a professional massage therapist has knowledge of medical law and bioethics
so that the client may be treated with understanding, sensitivity, and compassion. The
goal is to provide the student with education involving ethical and legal responsibilities so that
they may better serve their clients and the communities they serve in. Fundamental skill will be
offered to students for marketing a massage therapy business. Valuable tips for the beginner
practitioner are offered in order to guide the student to a successful business.
PMT 105 Wellness and Nutrition fo the Total Body 15 clock hours/lecture/1 credit
This course is an introduction to nutrition at a basic level. Nutrition and dietary concepts will
be discussed. Unique areas of concern are also covered for specific age groups. Students will
learn to tie nutrition together with wellness, and the body’s holistic needs as they relate to the
professional massage therapist.
